Snape Isn't Evil!
At least one other person thinks that Severus Snape isn't a villain, according to this MSN article. I haven't looked much at Internet resources, but personally, I'm convinced that A. Snape is not the bad guy that he appears to be from the kids' perspective, B. he didn't actually kill Dumbledore and C. he's actually trying to do his best for all the kids at Hogwarts, even Harry, Ron and Hermione. I think he hates it that he's in a position where he has to be responsible for James Potter's kid, but he takes his responsibilities seriously.
Do you disagree?

I readily agree with you on A and C, but I still challenge you on B. I think a faked death cheapens the loss that Harry feels, and cheapens the sacrifice of all others. Part of a true hero's growth is the loss of a mentor, and if Rowling was still writing for the younger set, I could see the fakery. The audience and the characters are both growing up, though, which to me says the loss is real, and the fight has passed on to the next generation.
But that's just me.

Ah, but remember that just before his death, Dumbledore was telling young Draco that he could fake his death so effectively that Voldemort would never know the difference, AND that earlier in the book Snape was going to have to do something that he didn't want to do, something dangerous, and Dumbledore told him he must. Add in the fact that the Avada Kedavra usually doesn't blow people 50 feet into the air, and hoocha hoocha hoocha Dumbledore's not dead.
As to a true hero's growth requiring a mentor, well, he HAS lost Dumbledore, now hasn't he? Even if he's not dead, he can't act overtly, and Harry's not a good enough actor to fake it, so he'd have to stay in the background and work behind the scenes, just like he has been from the beginning, only more so.
Also, the classic hero's journey doesn't necessarily require the loss of the mentor, just loss of some type.

Okay boys, you should really read what is being said by the fella over at www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com.
It is long, but he is backing it up with direct text. He is even comparing American text to British. Some of the stuff that was left out of the British version is interesting.
He is kind of "wishy-washy" in that he says either Dumbledore is not dead or that he at least planned his own death. Well, duh. That part bugs me, but I think that the evidence he provides will either help you further prove your point or to see the other.
Remember, this is MY geek area, and Amberle's too, of course.
